The Key to Changing Career Paths Without Changing Companies Is This

The Key to Changing Career Paths Without Changing Companies Is This Alex Archerbei loves teamwork. A former college athlete including for her alma mater, Stanfords, gymnastics and sailing team shes found collaboration to be a primary motivator in her life both personally and professionally. Certainly, shes found it to be one of her favorite things aboutGeneral Motors, where she works as a plan Release Engineer.Because Im on a program team, everyone has the same goals and provides kooperation to one another, she explained. It makes you want to work harder, and our team feels like a family.GM is Hiring Browse opportunities.Working toward a common goal with others, she says, grounds her. But just because the goal may be common doesnt mean it needs to be one-dimensional another thing Archer loves about her field of product design is that it opens itself well to creative thinking and varying skill sets.STEM is a more embracing area than most, because people are passionate about it and so much of STEM is about working together, she said. You dont have to be a mathematician there are also creative areas. Theres a place for everyone, and in this field, passion goes a long way.Archer recently shared with Fairygodboss her favorite aspects of life at GM, as well as her two biggest pieces of advice to young people considering STEM careers check them out belowHow long have you been in your current role, and what were you doing previously?I joined General Motors in 2015 fresh out of Stanford. GMs Virtual Performance Integration Manager, Bob Geisler, came to campus during my senior year, and after talking to him, I knew I wanted to apply for a job here. That soon came to fruition, and my first role at GM welches as an Interior Studio Designing Engineer, where my primary role was creating and providing criteria to creative designers. A year later, I moved to my current role as Interiors Design Release Engineer. From the beginning, Ive felt extremely valued here and a grea t sense of belonging. What sparked your interest in design thinking?Initially, I went to Stanford as a collegiate gymnast with the intent of pursuing a pre-medical degree. But then, my freshman year, I took a design thinking class and fell in love. We made 3D puzzles and also created a Rube Goldberg Machine that set off a series of movements and reactions. I liked the mix of mechanical, hands-on work, and design, and I decided to change my major to product design.I felt all the more certain about this decision after helping my grandpa rebuild the engine of a 1937 MG-TA and, shortly after that, joining Stanfords Solar Car team. My grandpa and I took apart the entire engine, cleaned the parts, and made new gaskets and a new oil filter. I really learned how important it was to be exact. For the first time I thought, wow, I could do something with cars in the future. With Solar Car, I made the decision to join Stanfords team to see how interested Id be in automotive. I learned how to run failure analyses, model in SolidWorks, and machine parts in-house. Coming to GM, my experience in SolidWorks helped me get the job as a studio designing engineer and an proved to be an even bigger advantage in my current role as a DRE.What drives you at work, and what keeps you interested?Theres so much opportunity at GM. Even though GM is one company, theres a chance to change careers and have new experiences. Im also driven by my mentors. Because Im on a program team, everyone has the same goals and provides support to one another. It makes you want to work harder and our team feels like a family, which is nice being so far from home. What about outside of work?I love to travel. During my first year at GM alone, I traveled to Switzerland, Iceland, and Hawaii, and Ive also made the trip home to Newport Beach (California) several times. Im so happy with the amount of vacation and work-life balance that GM offers. In my spare time, I also restore cars. Im currently working on a 1955 P ackard Clipper Constellation I purchased off a vintage car website in 2016. I re-built the carburetor, replaced all the brake lines, rebuilt the brake cylinder and brake drums, and after about a year, got the engine running to driving conditionYou yourself are a mentor to FIRST Robotics students. Can you talk a little more about the importance of mentorship who has been impactful in your life and career?Ive always had mentors at GM. My first mentor, Mike Orth, retired, but he really helped me when I first started. Hed take the time to not only explain things, but help me gain confidence by pushing me to try solving issues in new ways while always being there to look over it before I presented or submitted my ideas. He also used his spare time to teach me about the history of GM and the automotive industry, which helped me both understand and challenge current processes today. For me personally, mentoring a FIRST Robotics team has been so fun. The students absorb everything you say a nd are so interested in academia and the field of engineering, that going to meet the team is always a highlight of my day. Even though its not for a grade, the students are incredibly passionate, and you learn a lot about yourself when mentoring others. Also, my team won for the first time last year, which is really excitingAs a college athelete first as a gymnast and then, following an injury, as a member of Stanfords sailing team youve had experience overcoming obstacles and changing direction. If you could go back in time, what advice would you give yourself?Id give myself two pieces of advice. First, start slow. My freshman year was crazy I took way too many hard classes and was in such a new environment. I could never have prepared myself for that. My whole life, people telling me I couldnt do things has always pushed me harder. But you shouldnt always feel that way you dont need to prove yourself to anyone if you know youre doing your best.Second, Id tell myself that theres always tomorrow. This was important when I first started my career. When you work at your own pace, things will develop. Sometimes you need to be patient. What would you say to a young person whos interested in STEM, but is unsure of intimidated about getting started and finding opportunities?Get involved in extracurricular activities related to STEM. FIRST Robotics, for example, is incredible and something I didnt know about before Michigan. Other programs like Solar Car, Ecocar, SAE these are all organizations where theres always peers and people to meet who are also passionate about STEM. STEM is a more embracing area than most, because people are passionate about it and so much of STEM is about working together.Id also tell them to shadow mentors. Especially if youre in Detroit, reach out to GM. You dont have to be a mathematician there are also creative areas. Thats why I love product design its a mix of engineering and creativity. But the most important thing is to not be af raid. Theres a place for everyone, and in this field, passion goes a long way.--Fairygodboss is proud to partner with GM. Find a job there today

Is College a Worthy Investment

Is College a Worthy Investment Ive been surprised lately by the number of people Ive met who arent sure if college is really worth it. Many of these people have told me they believe it would be a welcheste of money to pay for something they might never use especially if they change their mind about their career path later on.The group Im talking about is made up of millennials in their 20s. Theyve seen their friends go to college and end up with little more than a pile of student loans and a degree that opens zero doors. They see their friends living at home with parents, unable to get their own apartments. As a result, they areunsure if they trust this system. The job market has beenlackluster for years. College tuition is at extremely high levels, creatingcorrespondingly high levels of student debt. Older workers are forced to stay in their jobs longer, leaving fewer good jobs for new graduates. When you think of it this way, the mistrust of higher e ducation makes sense. It can seem that the return on investment doesnt justify the money spent. However, this perspective worries me. In todays workforce, a college degree is often considered the minimum threshold for entry. Its similar to how a high school diploma was perceived in previous generations. Without one, a job seeker will likely be at a disadvantage.Very often, the specific degree one has is less important than having one at all. Ask anyone over the age of 40 what they studied in college. There is a decent chance youll be surprised by their answer because theyended up switching fields along the way. When I hear this doubt about the value of college, I think about a number of the older job seekers Ive met along the way. Early in their careers, they were leaders in their fields. They worked at the same companies for years, building up client bases and very large paychecks. Then one day, the industry shifted. The companies they worked for went out of business, and they were o ut of work.Suddenly, these successful, seasoned professionals felt lost. Employers are less interested in them. They have all the right experience and the right knowledge, but they dont have degrees. They dont meet the basic requirements. They struggle to find work that will pay enough to maintain their lifestyles. If youre struggling to decide about college, remember the long game. Education is expensive, but its almost always worth it. Think of how much youd be willing to pay for a new car because ithelps you get around easily. Education gets you places, too.And if college isnt for you for whatever reason, consider a trade program. Additional training will almost always put you ahead of your competition and help secure your future.A version of this article originally appeared in theMemphis Daily News.Angela Copeland is a career coach and CEO at her firm,Copeland Coaching.

What You Need to Know About the Motherhood Penalty

What You Need to Know About the Motherhood PenaltyWhat You Need to Know About the Motherhood Penalty5While you may be familiar with Equal Pay Day in April, did you know there is also an Equal Pay Day for moms in May? While Equal Pay Day in 2017 marked April 4 as the date when all working womens salaries finally caught up to the pay that men received for the previous year, moms Equal Pay Day this year will be celebrated on May 23, since that is how long it takes working moms to catch up.In other words, the typical amount of extra time that it takes working mothers to achieve the monetary equivalent to what working fathers receive in one year is five months. That means working female parents have to work nearly half a year mora than their male counterparts for the same pay. (Most women of color have to wait even longer for their paychecks to catch up to mens.)According to the American Association of University Women (AAUW), moms typically earn only 73 cents for each dollar dads earn. T his motherhood penalty is a lesser-known part of the gender pay gap.Knowing that dads get a bonus but moms get an added financial barrier at work, its important to do what you can to help mitigate this pay gap in your own career by using smart salary negotiation strategies. Here are a few negotiating tips to try andturn the tide on the motherhood penalty, until equal pay legislation catches up to where it needs to beFigure out how much youre worth- and then prove it.Arming yourself with data that shows average salary bands for your exact title and industry position in your area of the country gives you some ammunition to request a fair salary. Be sure that youve thoroughly prepared with facts and figures before entering any stage of salary negotiation, using websites like PayScale and Glassdoor to benchmark and fact-find the numbers you need to know.Dont blow the timing.Asking about money too early in the interview process is a faux pas, as is prematurely answering a recruiter or hir ing managers questions about your current compensation. If pressured to give numbers before youre ready, deflect the question back to your interviewers, seeing if you can get them to spill the beans first about the salary sortiment for the position. The right time to get more specific is after you have a job offer in hand.If current comp is part of the negotiation, be sure to factor in your entire compensation package at the company where you now work- not just base salary, but bonus, equity, overtime pay, and the dollar value of big-ticket items in your benefits package.Avoid caving too soon. While youre no doubt eager to seal the deal and know that you have a new job in the bag, try to project confidence and avoid insecure, instant follow-up that suggests youre overeager to take the first number offered. When waiting for confirmation of your valid and data-driven salary request, silence can be more powerful than checking in to be sure you didnt lose the opportunity, or second-guess ing your ask and offering a lower figure before hearing back on the answer. As Jesse Rauch, senior program manager at AAUW said in a recent press stellungnahme We know you cant negotiate your way around discrimination. But Rauch added that learning more about salary negotiation can help women take a critical step toward chipping away at their own personal pay gap.

5 Ways Introverts Can Thrive on Social Media Without Feeling Forced to Act Like Extroverts

5 Ways Introverts Can Thrive on Social Media Without Feeling Forced to Act Like Extroverts5 Ways Introverts Can Thrive on Social Media Without Feeling Forced to Act Like ExtrovertsBeing successful today means understanding social media. You need to be active on it to gain new customers, or, at minimum, to be aware of it to engage current customer conversations. I am actually an introvert, a Myers-Briggs Personality Test INFP. (Or, if you really want to get specific, I am an ambivert.)The struggle is real for ambitious people like myself, who need to master social media to keep the business thriving. Fortunately, were not only in the age of social media but in the age of social empowerment- namely through technology.Heres how you can thrive online and still be true to your introverted self1. Follow Fewer PeopleLike many journalists, Twitter became my platform of choice many years ago. I loved sharing varied opinions and conversations. I eventually started to feel suffocated, though- a s if a continual sea of commentary welches constantly thrashing me against the rocks. I realized that I was following too many people. I love initiating and enabling passionate, one-on-one conversations, and it was becoming debilitating to do that while following thousands of people. Instead, I took a drastic approach Around 2012, I began culling the people I followed down to the most essential and insightful. Its been tough, but I regularly keep my following group to around 300- the number of people I can consistently engage during the day. Instead, I use Twitter lists to keep up with other people without having the heavy news feed. Figure out how many people you can comfortably be connected with on your favorite social-media platform and stick with that number.2. Go Away for a WhileAs I learned in my week away from social media, fear of missing out (FOMO) is a bigger issue than actually missing something. You wouldnt be in a conference call 24 hours a day, nor would you have a non -stop conversation for days on end. Why would you constantly be on social media? It requires the same social energy, so treat it like any other engagement. There are also very few businesses, apart from airports and hospitals, that actually require 24/7 media engagement. Take regular, planned breaks from social media, all based around the times when your business has the lightest online needs.3. Treat It Like a PartyI love parties, not because of the number of people together, but because the odds are higher that I will have a great, engaging one-on-one conversation with at least one or two people there. Social media is similar, in that you connect with people who resonate with you and carry a continual conversation through the platform, and maybe even offline. As an introvert, it makes sense to focus on having good conversations with a few key people, rather than trying to have superficial conversations with everyone who is talking.4. Respect Your IntroversionDuring my recent socia l media unplug, I realized how much I sacrificed my alone time to run my former startup, do mora public speaking, and support my books. Im proud that I pushed myself to grow, but I also realized that I needed to rest. Again, social media time requires the same type of energy as having a face-to-face conversation. Listen to your own social flow and respectfully stop engaging in noncrucial conversations when you need quiet.5. Schedule PostsWhen Cuddlr was hitting the Apple Top 10, it was taking all my energy to keep up with the media requests, user feedback emails, and online responses. Scheduled posts became a life saver Apps like Buffer and Hootsuite allowed me to write and preprogram announcements at moments when I had more social energy. I could then build in quiet time without worrying about the businesss social media going off the rails. Use free scheduling apps for preplanned content and get more time to yourself. For me, a turning point came when I saw social expert Susan Cain speak at the TED Conference. Her book Quiet The Power of Introverts in a World That Cant Stop Talking talks about how introverts can be extremely strong business people in this social-focused age. As I learned, our introversion doesnt have to prevent us from soaring on social media. If you are an introvert like myself, how do you master your social-media presence?More From Inc.The Best Social Media HackOne Simple Metric You Need to Determine Marketing ROIThe Most Important Social Media Company Youve Never Heard Of
